Wastewater System Care

Live Odour & Blockage Free by Keeping Your System Healthy

Jump to specific sections

It all starts with the right bacteria

Whether you have a conventional septic system, a modern Aerated Wastewater Treatment System or a greywater system, it depends on natural bacterial digestive processes to convert waste into substances that can be released safely into the environment.

This natural biological process involves maintaining a healthy population of beneficial ‘good’ bacteria that can efficiently break down and consume waste so that the treated water can be safely returned to the environment.

With too few bacteria, or the wrong type, your systems efficiency drops dramatically. Bad smells develop, waste is left unconsumed, and blockages and expensive pump outs become more frequent. You might even have to renew your leach drain or absorption trench, and that can be very expensive.

Keeping a healthy population of beneficial bacteria in your system is the key to living a life that is free from nasty septic odours, unsightly blockages and costly system repairs.

What reduces bacterial populations?

There are several factors which can impact the effectiveness of your wastewater system.  While some of these are within our control, such as the types of cleaners and detergents we use, others like the use of antibiotics or extra load caused by extended family visits are not.

Using natural, non-chemical and 100% septic safe cleaners and detergents is the first step towards ensuring your septic system continues to operate without nasty smells and blockages. Over time caustic and phosphate based cleaners will kill off the beneficial bacteria in your system and impact its effectiveness in breaking down the waste, so removing these from your routine is the easiest way to start looking after it.

Sometimes we feel we need to use a harsh cleaner every now and then and we can’t always control exactly what goes down our drains, like antibiotics that are flushed from our body, that’s why it’s important to improve your biological conditions and restore your bacterial populations with a biological stimulant based additive like EcoCare Activator.

Why Septic System Care is so Important

Audits across Australia indicate that up to 40% of septic systems periodically perform poorly or fail. Without a maintenance plan most systems will under-perform over time as the system is subjected to harsh chemicals, antibiotics, disinfectants and excess waste.

Aside from the unpleasant odours from a failing system, these are some potential costs that you could be facing:

  • up to $3,000 to fix a blocked leach field
  • up to $1,200 in fines for excessive odours or effluent
  • up to $12,000 for a new system

Prevention really is better than the cure when it comes to septic systems, as the difference could be in the thousands of dollars.

Identifying a Failing System

Check for the following warning signs that your system might be failing and need attention:

  • If the grass above your leach field is greener than the surrounding area this is actually a bad sign. It means that excess effluent is passing through into your leach field instead of being broken down.
  • If you see any signs of effluent (waste material) around your septic tank or leach field this could be a leak or an overflowing tank. Contact an expert immediately.
  • Inspection pits and/or the soil absorption trenches consistently exhibiting high water levels.
  • Soil absorption trenches become waterlogged after storms.
  • General waterlogging around the effluent disposal area.
  • Presence of dead and dying vegetation around and down-slope of the effluent disposal area.
  • Strong odours near the tank and effluent area.
  • Blocked or slow draining water fixtures inside the house.
  • Odours coming from your septic tank, leach field, drains or from your sink, shower or toilets.

Remember, checking your system for these warning signs on a regular basis will allow you to identify any issues sooner, take action and prevent major system failures from occurring.

Caring for Your Wastewater System

Repairing a failed septic system is an unpleasant and costly experience, which can be easily avoided by combining these easy to follow tips with a regular treatment plan.

System Setup

Follow these tips to protect the structural integrity of your wastewater system and avoid unnecessary cracks and breakages:

  • Ensure your septic system is being protected from damage above. Keep the area free from concrete, asphalt, building and don’t drive over or park on the septic tank or leach field.
  • Make sure your septic tank cover is not loose or insecure. The cover should be fitted firmly as inefficient systems produce high volumes of methane and ammonium sulphide.
  • Make sure no trees or plants are growing near the septic tank or leach field. For each meter tall a tree is, the roots are likely just as long.

Household Cleaning

  • Don’t use bleach or other caustic chemical or high-phosphate cleaning products in your kitchen, laundry or toilets. These harsh cleaning products destroy the healthy bacteria necessary for your septic system to break down waste.
  • If you need to use these products, then make sure you prevent them from entering your drains and dispose of them in another way.
  • Swap out your conventional chemical based cleaners for 100% septic safe alternatives specifically designed to protect wastewater systems.

In the Kitchen

  • Limit the amount of cooking grease, coffee grounds and fats that enter your kitchen sink.
  • Use a sink strainer so that you reduce the amount of solid waste that enters your system. Food scraps can slow down the digestion process in your system and build solids up faster, meaning you need more frequent pump outs.
  • Washing dishes with an automatic dishwasher can use less water than washing dishes by hand. If you have a machine dishwasher, use a biologically-safe dishwasher liquid that nourishes your drains and will help keep your system in good condition.

In the Bathroom

  • Fix any leaky faucets or showerheads, they can allow excessive water to flow into your system.
  • Install a low-flow showerhead to conserve water and reduce the water flowing into your system.
  • Replace your conventional chemical based cleaners with septic beneficial alternatives like EcoShield Toilet and EcoShield Bathroom.
  • Don’t flush items such as plastic, tampons, condoms, paper towels or cat litter. These items can’t be digested by your system efficiently and can lead to more frequent pump outs.
  • Don’t flush old prescription medicines or antibiotics down your toilet. They can kill off the bacteria that work to break down your waste.

In the Laundry

  • Wash your laundry in stages over a few days, this will avoid flooding the system with a large volume of water at once.
  • Use low-phosphate laundry detergents as phosphorus is a major pollutant of waterways. Liquids, like EcoShield Laundry, usually contain less phosphorus than their powder counterparts.
  • Install a lint filter on your washing machine.
  • Repair any leaking taps.

Do you have problems with your wastewater system?

No need for a plumber – a simple and affordable solution

Quick, safe and simple to use, the fastest way to solve your septic problems is with EcoCare Activator – simply pour the recommended dosage into the sink, down the toilet or into your washbasin, bath or shower and EcoCare Activator will go to work at once.

As it moves through the pipes it softens and breaks down built-up residues, transforming grease and fat into small globules that can be easily digested by naturally occurring bacteria. The unique blend of macro and micro nutrients and bacterial stimulants in EcoCare Activator then go to work to ensure that natures own ‘good’ bacteria have everything they need to thrive. Blockages are removed, the breakdown of waste material is accelerated, bad smells and odours disappear and proper drainage is restored in leach drains and the surrounding soil.

Using EcoCare Activator will help prevent costly repairs, odours and blockages by improving your waste breakdown process; putting less stress on your system and increasing the time between pump outs.

EcoCare Activator - Septic or AWTS odour control and blockage prevention

EcoCare Activator works by performing three important functions:

  1. Promoting the growth of specific healthy bacteria that digest waste more efficiently.
  2. Accelerating the digestion process by breaking down waste into smaller particles so that the bacteria can digest it faster.
  3. Preventing odour compounds from escaping, which are then broken down by the healthy bacteria.

Even with the restorative power of EcoCare Activator and the protection provided by the EcoShield home cleaning range, it’s necessary to maintain your septic system and perform regular checks.

Have harmful cleaners you need to replace?

No problem – our EcoShield range of cleaning products work with EcoCare Activator to provide you with a complete home cleaning solution that is 100% safe for your septic or AWTS system and will not harm the beneficial bacteria that are vital to the ongoing performance of your system.
